Turkey Blocked Instagram Again: How to Get Access Back

Turkey is one of the most active countries in the world when it comes to blocking social media. Wikipedia was blocked for over two years (2017-2020). Twitter (now X) has been throttled or blocked multiple times. And Instagram has faced repeated bans, sometimes lasting weeks.

The pattern is consistent: a political event or public controversy triggers a government order, and Turkish ISPs block access to the platform within hours. Why Instagram gets blocked in Turkey

Turkey's Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) have broad powers to order blocks on websites and platforms. Common triggers:

• Political content that the government considers harmful to national security
• Refusal to comply with Turkish content removal orders (this was the reason for the 2024 Instagram block)
• Disinformation laws that require platforms to remove content within hours of a government request
